Senior Accommodation in Sydney

Recently a delegation representing the Australian Federal and State Governments, members of the Department of Housing, visited the Senior Accommodation Living Projects initiated by the “Assyrian Church of the East Retirement villages Australia Ltd” a branch of the Trust of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, Archdiocese of Australia and New Zealand, to observe the progress and the resent development.

H.B Mar Meelis Zaia AM, Metropolitan of the Church greeted the delegation and took them for a tour of the project and presented a brief on the latest progress achieved by the Church in providing the local senior community with a better accommodation. H.B explained of how the Church is eager to find solutions to the local tenancy problem facing this sector of the community who find it difficult to face the rising cost of tenancy in the Fairfield area.

The delegation consisted of the following members:

Sally Trovena (FaHCSIA), Sue Finnegan (FaHCSIA), John Paszek (HNSW), Helen O`loughlin (HNSW), Gallna Laurie (HNSW), Vivian Hanich (HNSW),Chrisina Foran (HNSW), Tanya Fichmond (HNSW), Nancy Tan (HNSW) and Julian Noylan (HNSW).

The delegation commended the Church and H.B for the project and praised the Assyrian Community for consistently endeavoring to find solution for the social problems facing the elderly and youth, also for the hard work that initiated by the Church to reduce the gap between the demands for low-cost tenancy and the number of applicants.

It is important to note that this project will assist the local elderly community to live in a low-cost accommodations units administered by the Church. Such project will contribute in aiding the seniors of our community to live in an environment were assistance is provided in medical, social, spiritual, and all other needs.

The projects consist of 50 units, 6 Studio apartments, 6 one bedroom apartments, and 38 two bedroom apartments located behind St.Mary’s Assyrian Church of the East in Smithfield, NSW Australia.

The project cost has exceeded 12 million dollars including land cost.

It is of importance to mention that the project is considered one of the First in the area and previously the Federal Minister Assisting the Treasurer, Mr. Chris Bowen MP has visited the Project and commended H.B for such initiative in helping the community adding to the successful of Educational projects accomplished by the Church.

The Apartments will be available to the tenants by the end of October this year.
