“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8.
A creative skit illustrating the daily struggles and triumphs faced by Christians is receiving widespread acclaim across social media networks for its inspiring performance St Peter’s Parish Youth Association members of the Assyrian Church of the East in Pheonix, Arizona.
The five-minute skit, performed alongside the song “Set Me Free” by Christian rock band Casting Crowns, portrays a youth “chained” by demons. In pain and struggling to break free on his own, the youth reaches out for guidance from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and is saved by Him.
Debuted to a live audience in St Peter’s Parish Hall on January 30, the skit was then uploaded to file-sharing website YouTube, shared via social networking on Facebook and has since been viewed more than 1400 times.
President of St Peter’s Parish Youth Association, David Kando, said the song’s lyrics inspired him to work with Youth Association members to illustrate and spread its powerful message.
“Throughout the year-and-a-half that I have been fortunate enough to work with these teens, I have seen struggles and triumphs that go hand in hand with the message that comes from this song. As we face challenges on a regular basis, the enemy is on the job working as hard as possible to bring us down to our knees and keep us there,” said Mr Kando.
The hero that we so desperately need to set us free in this daily battle is Jesus Christ, added Mr Kando.
“When we rely on Him, and only Him, we can stand firm in our faith that the Lord is with us and will never leave us. ‘No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)’
“On behalf of all the Youth Association members of Arizona, members of the committee, vice president Joseph Hermiz and myself, we are delighted with all of the positive responses and comments we’ve received in regard to the “Set Me Free” skit posted on YouTube and Facebook. It is a pleasure and blessing to have touched so many people in such a short time. May God bless you all and may he “set us free” from all of our trials and tribulations that we face daily,” said Mr Kando.
His Grace Mar Aprim Khamis, Bishop of the Diocese of the Western United States, viewed the performance, as well as Archdeacon Fredrick Hermiz, Reverend Kando D. Kando, priest of St Peter’s Parish, and many youth, family members and deacons.
The skit was followed by musical performances and an appreciation dinner, during which Youth Association members gave spitirually centred speeches relevant to today’s youth and parents.
