His Beatitude Mar Gewargis Sliwa, Metropolitan of Iraq, Jordan and Russia has delivered a lecture to faithful in Illinois entitled ‘Pictures from the Past’. The lecture was held at St Andrew’s Church, Glenview, Illinois on Tuesday 4th September 2012.
During the lecture, a wide range of historical images from throughout the history of the Assyrian Church of the East were displayed.
Before the commencement of the program, Rev’d Cor-bishop George Toma, parish priest of St Andrew’s Church welcomed His Beatitude and expressed his gratitude to the Metropolitan for the immense value of the lecture which would provide the faithful with a rich picture of the important role played by the Church of the East throughout the ages.
The lecture included a slideshow displaying hundreds of photos and manuscripts relevant to the Assyrian Church of the East including manuscripts of the Holy Bible stretching back hundreds of years. His Beatitude also played some audio prayers and hymns of historical relevance. These images and audio clips indicated the great spiritual and theological significance of the church’s ancient forefathers who maintained the true faith and heritage of the church.
Over the course of two hours, His Beatitude took the faithful through the glories, joys and sorrows of the Assyrian Church of the East and the Assyrian nation.
At the conclusion of the program, the faithful expressed their thanks to His Beatitude and congratulated him on the composition of the lecture, beseeching the Lord to bless him and guide him in his ministry.
It is noteworthy that the lecture was also attended by the Rev’d Archdeacon Shlemon Haskiel along with many faithful from Chicago.
